Since I was a kid, I’ve wanted to design and build a house. I had aspirations of being an architect, but in college found myself better suited to engineering. This is the story of our new home build in the Texas hill country.
We’ve owned several houses, and even bought one that was in the middle stages of construction. But until I retired, we never felt like we could devote the time needed to design and build our dream home. Now we are making that dream happen.
The design quickly became centered around our hobbies. I enjoy working on vehicles and we want a good place to store them. I also enjoy woodworking and need separate shop space. My very understanding wife (hitherto referred to as U.W.) likes sewing and craftwork, thus a dedicated space for that is needed since my grease and sawdust don’t mix well with her quilts and needle work. The garage and workshop became the focal point of the design as you’ll see in future posts. But we still need a place to live so we added bedrooms, kitchen and the like.
While you may be thinking this is just another barndominium build, it isn’t. It’s not a metal building and it won’t look like a barn. We have incorporated a large garage and workshop space into a cross between farmhouse and adirondack styles. The exterior will be stone and stucco with prominent cedar accents and a healthy amount of glass.
I hope you enjoy keeping up with the GarageDominium build – a Garage with a House attached.
Recently, I have been wondering about your new house. It’s good to see the progress and I look forward to the updates and the blog.
